What is Shirodhara?

Shirodhara is a Sanskrit word. Shiro: means head. Dhara: means flow. Shirodhara Therapy involves a warm stream of herbal sesame oil flowing over the forehead. Shirodhara as an ancient restorative therapy, evolved in India as part of the ayurvedic system and has only recently been introduced to the West.

The Shirodhara threatment begins with the application of relaxing hot towels, a short foot massage, heated stones will be laid upon the body, followed by a back and neck marma massage. One gallon of warm organic sesame oil infused with pure rose oil flows from a copper vessel for 20 minutes into your forehead. A gentle stream glides across the forehead, flows over the third eye (area above the bridge of the nose on the forehead) down your hair into a catching bowl. After the treatment there will be a short forehead massage with sandalwood, or rose oil.

Shirodhara quiets the mind, releases stress and produces a sense of deep peace. A deep meditative and intuitive state can be awakened and a shift of awareness and mental clarity can be experienced. Shirodhara has been known to be helpful in cases of insomnia, anxiety, depression and in general is calming for the nervous system. Shirodhara calms both the mind and the senses. A calm mind and body allows the body's natural healing mechanisms to come forth resulting in a hightened sense of self-awareness and well-being.

Shirodhara can be experienced on its own or following a massage or a facial. Balancing techniques may end the treatment in which you will be resting another 15 minutes listening to calming music or mantra chants.
